When Was Green Goddess Dressing Invented?
Green Goddess, one of the more famous salad dressings, has a very fun history! It was invented in the 1920s and its name, not just inspired by its color, is in reference to the play "The Green Goddess". The dressing was said to have been created at the Palace Hotel to honor the leading actor of the play, British actor George Arliss, who was staying there during the play's run. The dressing was a hit and is now a staple accompaniment to salads and a great stand-alone dip. Read more on Wikipedia.
How Do You Make Green Goddess Dressing?
You will need mayonnaise, garlic, chives, anchovy, sour cream, parsley, tarragon, pepper and lemon juice. These are the standard ingredients, but everyone has their own twist or variation. The combination of herbs and dairy makes it a very creamy and fresh dressing. To make, simply add all these ingredients to a blender and pulse to a smooth consistency, just like you will do in this recipe.
What Does Green Goddess Dressing Taste Like?
Lovers of Green Goddess describe it as tasting creamy, tangy, fresh, and herby. It's got all the richness of the mayonnaise and sour cream with some acidity from the lemon juice. Then the parsley, tarragon, and chives add that freshness and slight bitterness to complement the dairy.
This recipe gives you a similar feeling, and is one of my favorites.
How to Make Creamy Green Vegan Dressing
To whip up your vegan dressing, and an optional accompanying salad, these are the ingredients you will need: vegan mayonnaise, scallions, basil, orange juice, garlic, ponzu, salt, and pepper.

The only step to making the vegan dressing is to combine all the ingredients in a food processor or blender (link to Amazon opens in new tab). Mix them until they form a smooth dressing.

Here is my favorite way to serve this dressing. Toss together the little gem lettuce, segmented blood orange, pickled mustard seeds, toasted pumpkin seeds, radishes. Dress the salad liberally with your fresh vegan dressing, and it's ready to serve!
